How do Garage Door Outdoor Keypads Work?

April 20, 2016
How Do Garage Door Outdoor Keypads Work?

An outdoor keypad is, simply, a remote just like the one in the car but instead of a button, it uses a code. This, of course, makes certain that only people with the code can access the garage. It lets your family in and keeps burglars out.

Outdoor keypads are a great solution for easy and safe access to a garage through the automatic door. Most systems come ready to be set up with a four-digit code, which, when entered, will make the door raise or lower.

Even if your system did not come equipped with remote keypads, it is possible to buy a universal kit from a reliable manufacturer. In this instance, the code link is not set up at the factory, so the universal remote has to be made to learn the codes from the existing system.

The other option for a universal keypad remote is a learning feature. In this system, you program the keypad controller using the systems existing garage door remote. You press a specific set of buttons on the keypad while holding your existing remote near the pad. The keypad learns the radio signal and can then be programmed with a custom entry code.

Some automatic garage door openers come with these already set up for use. The homeowner presses an access button set on the garage door motor which allows a pass code to be set. Once the keypad has been programmed with the code, it will always activate the garage door when the code is pressed. The keypad uses a battery for power and is mounted outside the garage, often on the wall right by the door. Easy safe access is available with the press of a few buttons.

However, not everyone can be expected to carry around a garage door opener http://www.aladdindoors.com/ remote. Systems generally come with one or two, and it is best that they stay in the car. But if the cars arent around, or the batterys dead or, heaven forbid, one of the remotes gets lost, one cant generally just turn a handle and open a garage door like in the good old days. The system is set up to work electronically.

Because of this, most homes come with an electric keypad system for easy entry if a remote controller cant be had.

With modern houses almost always equipped with automatic garage door systems these days, the garage door itself often becomes the main access to the home, replacing the front door as the place where the family enters and leaves. Kids coming in with bikes, Dads coming in with lawn mowers, Moms coming in with gardening tools, everybody uses the garage. Its not just for parking the car anymore.

There are two ways that can work. Some keypad makers have access to the manufacturers keypad codes, and the remote is programmed by coding the wireless remote to the different model numbers available. Once you have access to the systems radio signal code, you can program the keypad to your own four-digit code.

Comcast adds Netgear’s cameras and Chamberlain garage doors to Xfinity home platform

April 19, 2016
Comcast is adding two more partners to its connected home effort with Netgears Arlo connected cameras and Chamberlains connected MyQ garage door opener system. The Arlo camera is a wireless IP camera that works indoors or outside, while the MyQ garage door can tell you if your garage door is open or closed. It also lets you shut or open the garage http://www.overheaddoorgroup.com/garage-door-repair/ while away from your home and can notify you if it is left open.

http://finance.fortune.cnn.com/2015/09/15/comcast-arlo-chamberlain/

That would also give Comcast an advantage over some of the more DIY platforms out there, which are trying to get homeowners to do all the work, or trying to build out their own installation networks. However, we still have to wait to see what Comcasts full impact will be on the smart home market, since these integrations arent all live yet, and the installers arent putting them up. But theres a lot of promise here. Even AT&T is warming to the idea of supporting third-party devices. At CTIA last week it said it would support the Nest thermostat as part of its Digital Life home automation service.

Comcast expects MyQ to be integrated later this month and Arlo gear by early next year. Comcast also plans to add support for August locks, Rachio home irrigation systems, the Whistle dog activity tracker and several other devices. The idea for Comcast is to start by integrating these devices into the Xfinity software that customers use to control their home so they dont have to switch from one app to another to take advantage of devices they already own. Comcast will also market these products to customers, which is a bonus for many of the companies that participate in the program.

These devices will eventually join nine other devices that Comcast has said it will support as part of its system of home automation and security products it offers its broadband and pay TV customers.

Subscribe to Data Sheet, Fortunes daily newsletter on the business of technology.

Eventually if Comcast decides to install these third-party devices as well it could be a huge advantage to both the sellers of these devices and to Comcast. While installing a MyQ garage door sensor involves sticking a sensor on your garage door with double-sided tape and placing a box up on the door opener itself with bolts or (in my case) zip ties, installing things can intimidate people. Thus, letting a Comcast installer put them in, might make a homeowner feel more comfortable buying these connected devices.

Prince George’s mourns firefighter as police continue shooting investigation

April 17, 2016
John E. Ulmschneider always wanted to be the first firefighter at the scene in an emergency. On Friday, his desire to help cost him his life.

Ulmschneider was among the Prince Georges County rescuers who rushed to a Temple Hills-Camp Springs-area house after a call from a man who had been unable to reach his diabetic brother. The caller told firefighters that he feared his brother had suffered a blackout or seizure.

When knocks on the door went unanswered and there was no response as rescuers announced that they were outside, the emergency workers decided to break through the door, officials said. As they did, gunshots erupted from inside, mortally wounding Ulmschneider and injuring another firefighter and the mans brother.

Authorities said Saturday that they are still working to determine why the 61-year-old man allegedly opened fire. But a county fire spokesman said it may have been a tragic mistake the man possibly thought that the rescuers were intruders seeking to break into his house.

The man was released from police custody Saturday evening, officials said, and no charges have been filed. Officials did not say whether the man had suffered a medical emergency.

One firefighter was shot and killed and a second was critically wounded Friday in Prince Georges County while answering a medical call, authorities said. (WUSA9)

As police continued their investigation, family members and colleagues mourned the death of the one firefighter and prayed for the recovery of the other. At Ulmschneiders station in Landover Hills, they draped black bunting over the firehouse and along the hood of an ambulance parked on the lawn.

Ulmschneider, who had been in the department for 13 years, was a husband and the father of a 2-year-old girl, officials said. The 37-year-old went by the nickname Skillet and http://www.aladdindoors.com/ had decided in high school that he would become a firefighter.

He wanted to help others, said Diana Krieger, whose daughter is married to Ulmschneiders brother. He loved doing what he was doing, being a paramedic and a firefighter, and I really believe that he was doing Gods work.

Authorities identified the wounded firefighter as Kevin Swain, 19, a volunteer at the Morningside station. They said he had been shot four times and underwent surgery at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. He is expected to survive, they said.

The injured brother was shot in the shoulder and was listed in fair condition at a local hospital, officials said. They did not identify either brother by name.

The incident began about 7:30p.m. Friday when firefighters and medics arrived at the home, said Mark Brady, a spokesman for the county department. The occupants brother was outside with them, he said, and the rescuers announced themselves loudly three times and knocked repeatedly.

Brady said the rescuers made the decision not to wait for police to arrive because they felt compelled that there could be a medical emergency going on and had to enter the house as soon as possible.

There is no set protocol governing when responders will enter a residence by force, he said. Rather, the decision is based on individual circumstances.

After the shooting, Brady said, the man inside the home quickly surrendered to police. Two additional volunteer firefighters were injured as they sought cover during the shooting, he said. One suffered a knee injury, and the other hurt her jaw.

On Saturday morning, officers had blocked off the home with police tape. There were two Prince Georges forensic services vans parked across the street and a police car parked in the driveway. The front and garage doors were open as investigators worked inside. The block of mostly ranch houses was quiet.

Jose Zuniga, who lives down the street, said he was on his porch Friday evening watching his young son and two grandchildren play soccer on the front lawn when he noticed an ambulance and fire emergency vehicle pull up.

The 52-year-old man, speaking in Spanish with his daughter as an interpreter, said he figured that it was a small house fire and thought nothing of it until he started hearing a smashing noise against the homes front door. Soon after, he heard gunshots and saw first responders leap into the bushes outside the door.

He ushered the children ages 3, 10 and 13 inside. He recalled thinking that it took a while for police to arrive.

Its the first time anything like this happened in his 11 years on the block, he said.

The Zunigas said that they didnt know who lived in the house but that it was a man. Another neighbor said the occupant had been there about seven years and lived by himself.

Brady said Ulmschneider was always the first person to step up to get a job done, so it wasnt surprising to anyone that he was one of the first ones at the door that evening.

He was extremely dedicated to service. He was a hard-working country boy, Brady said. Firefighters would joke that Skillet had such a hard head, he said, he could take a knock and keep on working.

As a teenager, Ulmschneider worked at Miller Farms in Prince Georges County and continued to help out between fire shifts, said Richard Miller, a member of the family that owns the farm.

Miller said that Ulmschneider met his wife, Dawn, at the farm. Her father also was a firefighter, and her mother is a distant relative of state Sen. Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. (D-Calvert), president of the Maryland Senate.

He explained how Ulmschneider, who lived in St. Marys County, earned his nickname: When Ulmschneider was a teenager, he drove a dirt bike off a hill near the farm, trying to do a trick and fell off and hit his head. When he was in the hospital with stitches and a red face, they all joked that he looked like a skillet.

The guy was never tired of helping you out. He would work all day at the fire department then would come by here, Miller said. Ulmschneider was someone who could fix and do anything around the farm as far as working on tractors, trucks. ... He always had a smile on his face, and if you were down, he would be the one who would get you back up.

Clarence Godfrey, a retired county paramedic, also had fond memories of Ulmschneider. He was hard-working and dedicated, said Godfrey, who lives in Upper Marlboro. He was very humble and funny.

Godfrey said Ulmschneider worked at several fire departments to pick up overtime. On Friday night, fire officials said, Ulmschneider was on assignment with the Forestville Fire/EMS station, but he typically worked at the Landover Hills Fire/EMS station.

In a statement, Prince Georges County Executive Rushern L. Baker III called Ulmschneider a dependable family man who loved serving this county as both a firefighter and paramedic.

Andrew Pantelis, president of the Prince Georges County Professional Fire Fighters and Paramedics Association Local 1619, said in a statement, This is a day that we have all dreaded in our minds.

We are keenly aware of the dangers of our profession but we all have hoped that God would continue to look over and protect us, he wrote. Now that tragedy has stricken us, we must not fall apart but stand strong and band together to support Skillets family and those who are closest to him.

Lynh Bui and Hamil H. Harris contributed to this report.

Liftmaster 371lm Garage Door Remotes

April 14, 2016
Programming your Liftmaster remote is relatively easy. The best place to start is by looking on the back of your Chamberlain Liftmaster 371LM remote. Here you will see a label with the clicker's information. The main item that we are looking for is the model number which is indicated by the "Chamberlain". Note that in Canada, it might say 371LMC, or if you have an accessmaster 371AC remote, it will indicate 371AC. The only differences between these models are in the name. Functionally they are identical.

The first letter in the model number will indicate the series. The 3 in this case indicates Chamberlain Liftmaster's newest Security+ ERT line. Note that this should not be confused with the original security plus line as they operate on different frequencies and are thus incompatible. Any model number of remote that begins with this 3 will be compatible with other remotes, keypads, or keychains in this series.

The number on the top right is the date of manufacture and is indicated in a format such as 06/07. The FCC ID is the number at te bottom of the remote and is often indicated by FCC ID: HBW1573. This number is shared by multiple models of remote so it should not be used to determine compatibility with the Chamberlain Chamberlain Liftmaster 371LM line of remotes. The last code in on the text on the left most side and is 132C2000-7. This simply indicates the regulations quoted as required by the FCC.

The Liftmaster 371LM should last for years without any maintenance. If any is needed, it is usually due to a dead battery. This can be easily fixed by inserting a screwdriver into the side panel to pry in into two pieces. You can then replace the button cell battery. This battery can be found at most supermarkets and hardware stores. For any other problems, it is almost always easier to buy a new garage door remote than to try and fix an old one. For more information about this product, you can visit www.liftmaster-371lm.com.

Once you know which remote that you will need, you will need to http://precisiondoor.net/ program your Liftmaster 371LM remote. To program the 371LM, press the purple button on the back of the logic board. Right afterwords, press the black button on the 371LM clicker. If everything went well, your new remote should be fully functional with your garage door opener.

The last number in the model number indicates the type of remote. A Liftmaster 370LM, for example, indicates that it is a keychain remote. The Liftmaster 371LM is the one button configuration of transmitter. The 372LM, 373LM, and 374LM each add a button to their configuration. The 376LM and 377LM are wireless keypads. The number on the top left of the label indicates internal part codes. The number used on most 371LM remotes is IC: 2666A 1573.

5 home remodeling payment options

If youre planning on renovating or remodeling your home, the one thing youll need is money. No matter how many ways you can find to cut back on costs, remodeling isnt cheap. Before rushing into any financial decision, research all the options available and find what payment option is best for you.

Aside from cashing in a 401k, or borrowing from a much-needed retirement plan, some of these other home remodeling payment options are available:

Home Improvement Loan - There are two loans administered through the FHA. If youre looking for a loan to fix up your existing home, you will want to look into what is called a Title I loan. A Title I loan allows you to borrow up to $ 25,000 for home improvements for a single-family home, and it is a fixed rate loan. (The other loan is a 203(k), but it is only used if you are purchasing a home that you plan on fixing up entirely)

Second Mortgage - If you have lived in your home long enough to accumulate equity, a second mortgage may be your best remodeling financing option. This is a fixed rate, fixed term loan that is based on the equity you have in your house.

Home Equity Line of Credit - If you feel comfortable putting your home up for collateral, then a home equity line of credit may be the best way option for you. This type of loan allows you to essentially use your home as a form of revolving credit. Your credit http://www.garagedoorrepairmontclair-ca.us/ line is typically set at 75% - 80% of the appraised value of your home less the balance of your first mortgage.

Cash Out Refinancing If you financed your home years ago, and locked in at a high interest rate, you may want to check into refinancing your home at a lower interest rate and adding additional cash out. This is a great option when remodeling because you can lower your monthly mortgage payment by refinancing, and get enough cash to complete your home improvement project.

Credit Cards Credit cards can be used to finance a home renovation or remodel project, but it is a method that should be used only if you know you can afford to pay more than the minimum payment due. If you use a credit card, be sure to select one with a reward system. This way youll earn gift cards, frequent flyer miles, or some other type of reward website to benefit from.

Before making any big decisions, take some time to consider if your home improvement project is really necessary. For example, your kitchen may simply need updated instead of replaced. That ripped or torn carpet may be hiding beautiful hardwood flooring underneath. After consideration, you may find that the remodeling project you thought you couldnt live without, may simply not be needed at all.

Calif. Couple Sues Reality TV Show 'Catch a Contractor'

April 10, 2016
When Rochelle Kirk and Scott Waters of Covina, Calif., hired contractors from "Catch a Contractor," a Spike TV reality show, they hadn't bargained on getting 200 gallons of raw sewage with the package.

That's according to their lawsuit, filed this week in Superior Court in Los Angeles County. The show, the two claim, is liable for 200 gallons of raw sewage that spilled into their home. They are suing for more than $2.87 million in compensatory damages.

&hl=en_US&fs=1&">&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="400" height="241">

In April of 2013, Kirk and Waters say, they were approached by a casting employee of "Catch a Contractor," hosted by comedian and radio personality Adam Carolla. The employee told them "she was https://www.arizonagaragedoorandrepair.com/ looking for families that have been abandoned by contractors and are currently living with construction nightmares," according to the couple's lawsuit.

Kirk and Waters said their bathroom was "abandoned and never properly completed" by contractors they hired in 2012, according to the lawsuit. So they decided to give the http://ow.ly/10qsQH reality show contractors a try.

Ironically, the show's concept "was to help families who had been taken advantage of by incompetent contractors by coming in and completing the project the right way," the lawsuit states.

After they were approached by the casting employee, the couple soon met with producers who "promised that in exchange for allowing the production company full access to their story and the house, the show would employ experienced, licensed contractors and crew to fix all the mistakes of the incompetent contractor," the suit said, and the couple signed and returned a contract in May.

The couple doesn't name Carolla as a defendant but instead names as defendants Spike TV, its owner Viacom, and individual plaintiffs and contractors. They allege negligence and violation of civil codes, claiming some of the contractors weren't properly licensed to work on the home.

David Schwarz, a spokesman for Spike TV, declined to comment, citing the network's policy related to pending litigation. A spokeswoman for Emergency Restoration Services Inc., a contractor named in the lawsuit as a defendant, also declined to comment. The defendants have about 30 days to file a legal response after they are served with the lawsuits.

The contractors were given "such a short time frame to complete the remodel" the lawsuit claims, that one of the contractors told the couple after the job began he was worried they wouldn't be able to finish the work, the lawsuit states.

As sewer pipes were moved, one of the sewer pipes was left disconnected, allowing about 200 gallons of raw sewage to spill under the shower, into the walls and underneath the house, the lawsuit states.

The couple say they made "numerous complaints" to the show's producers and contractors "about the failure to complete the work and the horrific smell but they refused to respond or make any repairs," the lawsuit states.

By early June, the couple began experiencing "severe headaches, fatigue, muscle aches, and abnormal drowsiness," while assuming it was the flu, the lawsuit states, and the next month their children began having coughing attacks and skin rashes. While their children were diagnosed with respiratory infections and put on medication, a doctor suggested the couple test for mold. After detecting moisture in the home, they hired plumbers who found raw sewage after opening an area of the wall, the lawsuit states.

By August, the couple and their children moved out of the house and into a hotel during the repair and remediation of the mold, water intrusion and sewage spill, and they didn't return until early December when they were notified it was safe to move back in, the lawsuit states.
